Super Snake
The first book in the new “Scales and Tails” series by award-winning children’s author Gregg Dreise
A tale of creation, culture, and coming together.
Super Snake is the debut title in Gregg Dreise’s exciting new series Scales and Tails, and the first to feature a vibrant new square format. Blending humour, heart, and traditional storytelling, this beautifully illustrated book brings to life the story of the Rainbow Serpent and the creation of the Darling/Barka River.
Long ago—before “Once upon a time”—there was the Dreamtime. The land was dry, the bush parched from drought. Then a mighty rainbow appeared after a storm, and down it slithered the Super Snake. With a promise to help the Elders find water, the Super Snake declared:
“You can’t have a rainbow without water.”
Dhurraluwi guuma-li — Come together
Wantima — Rise up
Woorri — Share
With its powerful message of unity, resourcefulness, and respect for Country, Super Snake is destined to become a family favourite and a classroom treasure.
About the Author
Gregg Dreise grew up reading The Rainbow Serpent by Dick Roughsey in school. Inspired by that experience, he’s long dreamed of creating a Rainbow Serpent story rooted in his own Culture. With Super Snake, he celebrates the richness and diversity of Aboriginal Cultures across Australia—each with their own stories, languages, and Countries.
While many outside Australia may think of Aboriginal people as one group, this continent is home to hundreds of unique Nations. Through Super Snake, Gregg helps share that truth—one colourful scale at a time.
